The Hollywood film Stowaway, a science fiction thriller by Joe Penna, with renowned actors such as Toni Collette and Daniel Dae Kim opened in German cinemas on 24 June 2021. And a touch of Hollywood is now officially wafting through the hangars of the Wernigerode Aviation Museum. For here stands the original cockpit module in which numerous film scenes were shot.
But after films such as Bridge of Spies and Scouts of Peace, how did the Wernigerode Aviation Museum come to be involved in the film industry once again? At the beginning of 2019, augenschein Filmproduktion approached Clemens Aulich, museum owner, and asked for support in building props for an upcoming film project. Specifically, the request was to build a space shuttle cockpit for a Hollywood production; more detailed information was not known for a long time, even during the collaboration. Work on the cockpit, for which Aulich acted in an advisory capacity and worked with the museum team to procure components and build and assemble the entire cockpit equipment, began immediately after the initial discussions.
In mid-2019, the time had come - the shooting in the cockpit took place after the museum team had finished their work in Munich. Now the original cockpit is once again in the Aviation Museum Wernigerode and can be viewed as part of a museum visit in the exhibition. The museum is open daily 10 - 18 o'clock.
